Avalon Organics - Product Review

For this assignment, I will be evaluating the hand lotion that I use nightly before bed and it is also the lotion that we have in our restrooms to use after washing your hands. The product is Avalon Organics Rejuvenating Rosemary Hand & Body Lotion.

When looking at the ingredients label on the back, there are quite a few that are familiar to me, which include the following:

  • Aqua (water)

  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice

  • Glycerin

  • Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil

  • Avena Sativa (Oat) Bran

  • Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract

  • Dioscorea Villosa (Wild Yam) Root Extract

  • Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract

  • Styrax Benzoin Resin Extract

  • Copaifera Officinalis (Balsam Copaiba) Resin

  • Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter

  • Cedrus Atlantica Bark Oil

  • Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil

  • Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil

  • Cocos Nucifera (Coconut Oil)

  • Coriandrum Sativum (Coriander) Fruit Oil

  • Geranium Maculatum Oil

  • Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil

  • Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil

  • Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil

  • Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil

  • Xantham Gum

  • Alcohol

  • Citral

  • Citronellol

  • Coumarin

  • Geraniol

  • Limonene

  • Linalool

Honestly, I don’t feel that I need to avoid any of the ingredients that are included in this product. The majority of them as listed above, I am familiar with. The ones I am not familiar with; I have seen before on other vegan products so that makes me comfortable with it. On the back of the product, it states the following:

“Contains organic ingredients. No GMOs, parabens, harsh preservatives, synthetic colors or fragrances, phthalates, sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate or animal testing.”

The product does state that it contains organic ingredients, but it does not carry the USDA Organic seal. It does however carry the NSF Certified seal on the front of the product. Products that carry the NSF Certified seal I do trust because of the way the independent company continuously tests not only the products, but also the facilities the products are made in and also the plants and materials that are used in the production of the product. The NSF website states the following explanation:

“Choosing a product certified by NSF lets you know the company complies with strict standards and procedures imposed by NSF. From extensive product testing and material analyses to unannounced plant inspections, every aspect of a product's development is thoroughly evaluated before it can earn our certification.

Most importantly, NSF certification is not a one-time event, but involves regular on-site inspections of manufacturing facilities and regular re-testing of products to ensure that they continue to meet the same high standards required to maintain certification over time. If for any reason a product fails to meet one or more certification criteria, NSF will take enforcement actions to protect you, including product recall, public notification or de-certification.

Products that earn NSF certification are said to be “NSF certified” or “NSF listed” and display the applicable NSF certification mark to show that they have been tested by one of today’s most respected independent product testing organizations.”
